We're progressing well and on schedule with this work and aim to free things up for the Christmas break.

Construction work, being undertaken by GP Friel commenced mid-August 2023 and will take around six months to complete in stages.

Since Monday 25 September, work has been underway at the intersection of Hawkestone and Molesworth streets resulting in a full closure of Hawkestone Street to through traffic.

With on Molesworth Street completed mid November, crews are carrying on up Hawkestone Street with the Molesworth Street intersection remaining closed for the duration. This means:

  • Vehicles will not be able to turn into or out of Hawkestone Street at the Molesworth Street intersection.
  • Traffic from SH1 off ramp will have to turn right and follow a detour.
  • Access to Hawkestone Street and Portland Crescent for residents and businesses will be maintained at all times (unless by arrangement)
  • There will be parking restriction on Hawkestone Street.

Traffic management and signage is in place to ensure the safety of road users, pedestrians and our construction crews. Access to properties will be maintained at all times, but parking around the worksites will be limited.

Hours of work will be Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm with occasional weekend work if required.

Hawkestone Street will reopen for the Christmas break from 25 December to 8 January. Works will then recommence until the project is completed around February/ March 2024.

We are renewing the wastewater pipeline along Hawkestone and Molesworth streets which is aging and in poor condition. Sections of the of the pipe will be renewed to improve the resilience of the network and protect public and environmental health.

Faults have also been found in the stormwater pipelines on Hawkestone Street. We are renewing two major sections of the pipe to reduce flood risk and protect road users and pedestrians.

With the Molesworth Street section now completed, works will continue along Hawkestone Street up until the Christmas. We're then aiming to reopen Hawkestone Street for the Christmas break  to free things up for the local community. The road will be closed again when works recommence on 8 January 2024.

We're expecting to have the project completed by March 2024 - if not earlier.
