Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant
At the Moa Point Treatment Plant, wastewater travels through a series of screens, tanks, bioreactors, clarifiers and ultraviolet treatments before being discharged as liquid into Cook Strait. The plant has capacity to discharge up to 260,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day.
Each day the plant cleans and disinfects wastewater from about 180,000 people. It treats an average 850 litres of water (or about three standard bathtubs) every second and up to 3,000 litres a second during heavy rainfall.

Plant performance
Current Status: Non-compliant (with noted issue)
Period: August 2025
Commentary
The plant is compliant for effluent quality, but was non-compliant for one air quality measure.
Discharges
No discharges in August.
Odour complaints
There was one odour complaint in August relating to the Southern Landfill site and Careys Gully Sludge Dewatering
plant.
Items of significance:
Odour Management System
Investigations continue into the decreased performance of the chemical scrubber system. The plant was non-compliant for Total Reduced Sulphur (TRS) in August and investigations continue. The team are actively working with overseas odour experts to help identify the root cause of the issue. Previously reported adjustments to operational set points of the scrubber system have not acheived desired performance outcomes, and the next set of actions to restore reliable performance are being implemented.
