Wellington Water is working to replace the aging Kaitoke bulk water main from the Te Mārua Water Treatment Plant. This vital piece of infrastructure forms that supplies all the drinking water to Porirua City and also provides 40% of Wellington City’s water.
The current bulk water main needs replacing due to its condition, and is vulnerable to major earthquakes. This project will increase the seismic resilience to the region’s water supply through an innovative design that addresses the site conditions of the pipe route traversing across the Hutt Valley.
We are proposing to start building a new bridge and bulk water main in 2022/23.
The image above shows a visualisation of the proposed design concept and here's a flyover.
We are committed to working with the community on this project and expect to present final options, following the geotechnical assessments in 2021 and seek input into the next stage.
