BOIL WATER NOTICE - THOMPSON STREET, MOUNT COOK
BOIL WATER OUTAGE - THOMPSON STREET, MOUNT COOK

The Boil Water Notice remains in place for of all properties on Thompson Street and 77 Nairn Street, Mt Cook, until further notice.

Follow the repair of the burst pipe on Thompson Street, there is a low risk that the water has been contaminated with bacteria. The bacteria can be killed by boiling which is why a boil water notice has been issued as a precaution.

Residents in these impacted areas must boil their water before it is used for drinking, food preparation or dental hygiene. Please make sure you flush your pipes by running a cold tap for 5 minutes.

Daily testing is being carried out for the next few days. We will advise when testing results confirm it is safe to lift the boil water notice.

Wellington Water, 04 912 4400

Starting in July 2025 we will be completing works at:

  • Victoria Street between Willeston Street and Wakefield Street
  • Wakefield Street between Victoria Street and Taranaki Street
  • Three underground pump stations in the same area

The work will require excavation in the road corridor and will take place in stages from July 2025 to May 2026.

To safely do this work, we will:

  • Extend the current lane closure along Victoria Street
  • Close the eastbound lane of Wakefield Street between Cuba and Taranaki Streets
  • Restrict on-street parking to relocate tour bus parks to Wakefield Street.

There will also be a short (one week) full closure of Victoria Street by the Mercer Street intersection.

The contractors undertaking this work are GP Friel Ltd, E N Ramsbottom Ltd, and Brian Perry Civil.

This new rising main will increase the capacity and resilience of the CBD’s wastewater network, providing additional options in case of bursts or overflows and reducing the risk of wastewater being discharged into the harbour.

We have coordinated with other civil and infrastructure projects in the area, including Te Ngākau Precinct, to minimise the disruption to residents and businesses.

If you have any questions about this project, please contact: tengakau@wcc.govt.nz.
