In late April, a blessing led by Ngāti Toa Rangatira kaumatua Maikara Thorpe was held. The blessing acknowledged the cultural significance of the area and the importance of the project.
A temporary wastewater pipe has been in place since 2023 after the existing pipe was destroyed by a landslip.
The pipe runs through a steep and ecologically sensitive gully between Pa Road and Haunui Road.
The permanent solution involves installing 82 new piles to support approximately 160 metres of new wastewater pipe.
The work will strengthen network resilience, reduce the risk of future service failures, and provide a long-term wastewater solution for Pa Road residents.

Due to the challenging environment, specialist abseilers will drill anchor points into the gully rock face. These anchors will support crews to safely install the 82 new piles and 60 metres of new wastewater pipe.
Traffic management will be in place at the bottom of Pukerua Beach Road for up to six weeks from late May to manage traffic flow and help keep everyone safe.
Subject to weather and site conditions, the project is expected to be completed in July. This project will strengthen network resilience, reduce the risk of future service failures, and provide a long-term wastewater solution for Pa Road residents.
