Latest Updates
We've now mostly completed the latest phase of works on the Stokes Valley and Wainuiomata pipe renewals project (known as 'Package Two), with Package Three expected to start in March 2026.
We've now mostly completed the latest phase of the Stokes Valley and Wainuiomata pipe renewals project (known as the 'Galvinised Iron ridermain renewals package two'). The next phase, known as 'Package Three', is expected to start in March 2026.
Here’s some of the project wins (from 'Package Two' works):
- 1150 metres of new drinking water pipe installed in Stokes Valley, and a further 300 metres along Moohan Street, Wainuiomata.
- We’ve replaced old pipes which were mostly installed around 1965.
- This work, by preventing leaks, has saved around 67,700 litres of water per day in Stokes Valley and 1,510 litres in Wainuiomata.
- The new pipes are expected last up to 100 years – keeping water in the pipes and reliably supplied to local communities.
- Trenchless technology played a big part, helping reduce the need for large trenches to be dug out along footpaths and streets.
Many parts of Stokes Valley and Wainuiomata have Galvinised Iron water pipes, which were installed in the 1960’s. These pipes are known to corrode from the inside as they age, creating little pinholes where leaks appear.
We established a Water Loss Programme, which identified many parts of Stokes Valley and Wainuiomata as priority areas for pipe renewals, because of the amount of water being lost through leaky pipes.
We have now installed 1,150 metres of new pipe in Stokes Valley, and a further 300 metres in Moohan Street, Wainuiomata. This safeguards the supply of safe, healthy drinking water to communities for up to 100 years.
Here’s where we've installed new pipes so far (see 'Package One and Two'). Note: We've installed pipes along sections of these streets and roads, in most cases and we've replaced ridermain pipes only (rather than all drinking water pipes).
You can also see what's coming up under Package Three (TBC).
