Residents advised to avoid the the Porirua Stream from Grenada Village including Tawa to the outlet at the mouth of the Porirua Harbour until further notice

Wellington Water crews stopped a wastewater overflow in Grenada Village which flows to the Porirua Stream. Residents are asked to avoid the the Porirua Stream from Grenada Village including Tawa to the outlet at the mouth of the Porirua Harbour until further notice.

As untreated wastewater entered the stream, these areas are unsuitable for the public for wading in, fishing, or gathering food from. Signs have been put up and sampling will be undertaken tomorrow morning.

On behalf of Wellington City Council, we are renewing stormwater assets in Shirley Street, Karori to improve performance of the network and reduce the risk of flooding.

Current Status

The contractor is due to start work on site on 16 October 2023 and will take around eight weeks to complete. 

The work involves renewing the stormwater main that runs between 2 Hurman Street,39 Shirley Street and onto the cul-de-sac outside 32A Shirley Street

 No major impacts on traffic or pedestrian movements are expected, but there may be more vehicles in the area and some noise.
