This beautiful stream flowing through Prince of Wales Park is a natural channel for stormwater, which eventually runs into a pipe on Papawai Terrace.

Heavier, more frequent rainfall had led to the stream bed eroding, and a lot of sediment being pushed into the stormwater network. This can create blockages in the pipes, and lead to overflows and flooding.

By clearing debris from the stream bed, and placing new plants and rocks – by hand, not excavator! – we’ve strengthened the banks of the stream, supported the natural ecosystem in the area, and increased the resilience and longevity of the stormwater network.

We are now investigating further options to remove sediment from the stream before it reaches the piped stormwater network.
