Severe weather conditions may impact the network

Due to severe weather conditions forecasted from today, 30 April until Friday 2 May, there may be impacts on the network,

Heavy rain increases the chance of excess stormwater entering the wastewater network, which it doesn’t have capacity for. This means there is a higher risk of wastewater overflows during wet weather events or emergencies such as major power cuts.

Our operations team are checking known risk areas and working to ensure that the stormwater network will be running as smoothly as possible.

Multiple water outages in Porirua

Kia ora Porirua,

There are multiple burst drinking water pipes in Porirua which are resulting in widespread disruption to residents’ drinking water supply. We apologise for the disruption, and we are doing our best to look after affected residents. We thank residents for their patience as our crews work as fast as they can to resolve the issue.

We have organised water tankers for affected residents to fill up containers with drinking water while our crews work on the repairs. The tankers are at:

  • 20 Champion Street
  • 17 Cheshire Street
  • 92 Mckillop Street
  • 24 Hampshire Street
  • One more tanker is on its way and will be located in Cornwall Street/Dorset Street.

If you're unable to leave your home please call 04 912 44701, extension 1. Let them know your address and we will have water delivered to you.

A faulty pressure reducing valve in Cannons Creek was the initial cause of the issue. The valve opened automatically after the initial burst, which then caused the lower Porirua network to increase pressure from the Porirua High Reservoir. The increase in pressure resulted in other weak spots in the water pipes bursting.

Traffic management will be in place to keep the public and our crews safe as we complete the repairs.

For further information please head to the Wellington Water Facebook page, as we will post new information throughout the day. Follow this link - https://www.facebook.com/wellingtonwater/

In the meantime, please be patient with our crews as they are working to fix the pipes as soon as they can.
