Wellington Water crews stopped a wastewater overflow in Grenada Village which flows to the Porirua Stream. Residents are asked to avoid the the Porirua Stream from Grenada Village including Tawa to the outlet at the mouth of the Porirua Harbour until further notice.

As untreated wastewater entered the stream, these areas are unsuitable for the public for wading in, fishing, or gathering food from. Signs have been put up and sampling will be undertaken tomorrow morning.

Seaview wastewater treatment plant outfall pipe repair

Fully treated wastewater is currently being diverted into the Waiwhetu Stream as a result of a joint failure in the Seaview Wastewater Treatment Plant outfall pipe early this morning.

Our contactors are working as quickly as possible to repair the joint failure. It will take most of the day to drain the outfall pipe and repairs will begin as soon as the pipe is drained. We expect that the repair will be completed within two days.

To assist in draining the outfall pipe, scour valves (additional drainage points) have been opened between Windy Point and Burdens Gate in Eastbourne. Health warning signs have been erected advising people not to swim or collect seafood in the affected areas and water quality testing is underway.

The discharge via an overflow pipe into the Waiwhetu Stream is a consented contingency in case of emergencies.
