Untreated, unscreened wastewater is being discharged into Tarakena Bay. Check LAWA.org.nz before visiting beaches.

Due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area starting at 08:12 25/06/2026, the short outfall pipe is discharging untreated wastewater into Tarakena Bay. It is likely to be travelling around the coastline.

Signs are in place along the coastline to alert water users of areas which may be impacted by this event. Water quality samples will be collected from coastal locations once improved weather conditions allow. The latest water sampling results are published here.

Please, check LAWA.org.nz before visiting beaches along the south coast. LAWA recommend avoiding swimming for 48 hours following heavy rain, regardless of the recent monitoring result or long-term grade.

Wellington Water crews responding to wastewater overflow on State Highway 2

Our team have responded to a wastewater overflow on State Highway 2. The overflow is from a manhole on the southbound lanes close to the Ngauranga exit. There is a southbound lane closure in place approaching Ngauranga. Our teams are working to isolate the affected section of wastewater line so that we can identify and repair the fault. The overflow is discharging into the habour through the stormwater drains.

Porirua flooding drop-in sessions

Porirua City Council and Wellington Water are holding some drop-in evenings to discuss the latest flooding hazards that we have been modelling and mapping in Titahi Bay, Porirua CBD, Plimmerton and Cannons Creek.

We are interested in the community’s observations, any photos of local flooding recently experienced and any information that could help us understand the catchment areas better. If you have been affected by flooding it would be great to see you at one of our sessions.

The drop in sessions will be held on:

  • Thursday 12 July from 7pm to 8.30 pm at Titahi Bay Primary school.
  • Tuesday 24 July from 7pm to 8.30pm at Porirua School.
  • Tuesday 31 July from 7pm to 8.30pm at St Theresas Catholic Church.
  • Wednesday 8 August from 7pm to 8.30pm at Cannons Creek School.

See you there.
