Where are the water stations?

Community water stations are strategically located at 21 sites across urban Wellington. An additional water station can be deployed to areas of highest need after the earthquake, and will be used for training.

We worked closely with Wellington's councils, community groups, and residents to confirm the design and location for each water station. Decisions on the design and location of each new water station were based on availability of water, site accessibility, and landowner preference.

Emergency response islands

A major earthquake will isolate the urban Wellington region into 17 emergency response ‘islands’ – through inaccessible roads, landslides, debris, and flooding. The water stations provide an alternative water supply for the islands.

Water supply within each island is driven by:

  • population numbers
  • proximity to alternative water sources
  • water supply from alternative water sources
  • water supply from existing reservoirs
  • estimated time for water supply network to function (the reticulation system).

A lot of people will use Community Water Stations in an emergency, including vehicles that need to transport water around the island. It is really important that these sites have good vehicle access, easy pedestrian access, and people know where to find them, and how to use them.

Resilient communities

Promoting the need for our community, businesses and critical users to be self-sufficient for the first seven days is a major focus for us.
