Wallace Street Closure
Wallace Street will be closed to through traffic from the 5th of January through to mid-2020.
This will allow us to install major new drinking water pipes in Wallace St that will connect to the soon-to-be-built Omāroro reservoir. Whilst we are installing new stormwater pipes as part of the wider pipelines project, during the closure work will focus solely on the reservoir pipes.
We appreciate and value the patience and understanding of Wellingtonians as we carry out this important work.
What you need to know
Wallace St will be closed to through traffic between John St and Hargreaves St, with Wright St the diversion route and Adelaide Rd a preferred alternate route.
You should expect traffic delays if travelling in this area.
We’re asking people who drive to consider other modes of transport, to take other routes where possible, and to travel outside peak times. Cyclists, walkers and scooter users will continue to have safe access at all times along Wallace St. Services vehicles and residents will also continue to have access along Wallace St.
We are starting this work in January when traffic flows are lighter with many schools and tertiary organisations closed for the summer. This closure of Wallace St means this work will be done quicker in around six months, rather than a partial closure which would have stop/go on Wallace St for over a year.
Traffic signage will be operating throughout to provide guidance and we will be closely monitoring traffic flows in the area during the closure and diversion.
The buses affected by the closed section of Wallace St are #3 Lyall Bay/Rongotai – Wellington Station; #18e Karori – Miramar; #27 Vogeltown – Wellington Station and school buses 718, 726 and 770.
These buses will use a detour route along Wright St, (except the school bus #770 afternoon service which will be diverted via Adelaide Road). There will be a temporary bus stop on each side of Wright St next to the walkway to replace the existing one on Wallace St. See map here.
Metlink has tested buses on the diversion route along Wright St and work has been done on the road contouring and surface to ensure safety, camber and turning is suitable for the buses.
#27 buses will not be stopping at Hutchison Terminus and will travel from Vogeltown along Hutchison Rd directly onto Wright St, bypassing the Hutchison Terminus, and vice versa. Passengers should catch the #27 bus from Wright St.
Metlink has provided timetable updates and a full map of the Wright St diversion bus routes here.
We will be closely monitoring traffic flows on Adelaide Rd during the diversion to consider options if necessary.
Parking allocation, bus stops and pedestrian crossing
All coupon parking on Wright St and Salisbury Terrace will become resident parking. And there will be no parking on the western side of Wright Street. All other parking will remain the same. Temporary bus stops and a pedestrian crossing will also be located on Wright Street.
