The Cross-Harbour Pipeline is a major new public project to improve bulk water supply resilience for Wellington city.

Wellington City’s water supply is vulnerable, piped from the Hutt Valley along State Highways 1 and 2 crossing known earthquake fault-lines multiple times. If damaged in a large earthquake, the pipes could take months to repair. That could leave parts of the city, particularly the eastern and southern suburbs, without water for up to 100 days.

The pipeline will provide a critical alternative supply line to Wellington, carrying water from the Hutt Valley across Wellington Harbour to connect to the city network.

As well as helping ensure safe drinking water for Wellington city after a major earthquake or similar disaster, the pipeline will also provide much needed operational resilience ensuring  repairs and upgrades can be carried out without disrupting supply.
